1. Getting started
• Short explainer what a colostomy is, common reasons for surgery, normal vs concerning output
2. Infection prevention basics
• Interactive screen on the 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene with a drag-and-drop exercise
• PPE selection for stoma care in community and ward settings
• Signpost to local IPC policy in your organisation
3. Appliances and accessories
• One-piece closed vs two-piece, flat vs convex, filters, barriers, rings, adhesive removers
• When closed one-piece bags are appropriate, and why correct selection matters
• Note on prescribing and avoiding waste; refer learners to local ordering processes
4. Step-by-step: emptying and changing a closed pouch
5. Preventing and troubleshooting common problems
Pancaking, ballooning, odour, sore skin, granulomas, parastomal hernia, prolapse, constipation or blockage, leakage
• Practical fixes and when to escalate. Include a branching scenario on managing pancaking and ballooning
6. Red flags and escalation
• Stoma becomes dark, dusky, or very pale
• Persistent bleeding from the stoma or mucocutaneous junction
• Rapidly increasing pain, signs of obstruction, no output with cramping, or severe diarrhoea with dehydration
• New or rapidly enlarging parastomal hernia, prolapse that will not reduce, or signs of skin infection
• Escalate to the Stoma Care Nurse, surgical team, GP, NHS 111, or emergency care as indicated
7. Documentation and communication (10 min)
• Record procedure, appliance used, stoma and skin assessment findings, education provided, and the person’s tolerance of the procedure
• Use clear, objective language and report concerns promptly in line with the NMC Code
8. Person-centred care and support (10 min)
• Promote independence, privacy, and choice
• Signpost to local stoma support services and helplines

Learning outcomes
1. Explain what a colostomy is, common indications, and basic anatomy
2. Apply Standard Infection Control Precautions during colostomy care and perform hand hygiene at the right moments
3. Safely empty and change a closed colostomy pouch, protecting peristomal skin and maintaining dignity
4. Recognise red flags that need escalation to a Stoma Care Nurse or urgent medical review
5. Document care accurately and communicate concerns in line with the NMC Code
6. Dispose of waste safely in line with local HTM 07-01 policy
7. Describe appliance types and when to seek advice on alternatives
