PMVA (Prevention Management of Violence and Aggression)

The RRN Training Standards have replaced the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) Code of Practice.

This course is for candidates who are required to complete 3-day PMVA training or those that need to update their 3-day PMVA training certificate.

Course Pre-Requisite Requirements

-Understand the levels of risk posed by challenging people.
-Explain how you can meet a person need and create a supportive environment.
-Understand the balance between enhancing quality of life and reducing restraint.
-Describe the effect of negative/ environmental factors.
-Explain the use of ‘reasonable force’ and its limitations/ legal requirements.
-Understand primary strategies and how to proactively meet a person’s needs.
-Understand the importance of verbal + non-verbal communication during conflict.
-Underline the impact that cultural differences may have in relation to communication.
-Identify causes of communication breakdown.
-Describe the common causes of conflict.
-Recognise the warning and danger signals displayed during a conflict situation.
-Recognise the importance of early intervention.
-Provide support to those directly affected by a violent incident.
-Understand the different types of de-escalation strategies.
-Define appropriate Secondary and Territory Non-Restrictive and Restrictive Strategies to manage aggressive individuals.

• Risks Associated with Restraint
• Mental Capacity + Mental Health
• Challenging Behaviour, Behaviours of Concern
• Root Causes of Distress
• Creating a Supportive Culture
• Health, Therapeutic Relationships + Person Centred Care
• Populations and Locations
• Dynamic Risk Assessments
• Stages of the Assault Cycle
• Situational Awareness
• Identifying, Managing and Reflecting on Triggers
• Listening and Communication Skills (communication models)
• Indicators of Confrontational Behaviour (Warning and Danger Signs)
• Documentation, Record Keeping + Post Incident De-briefing.

Day 2
• Verbal and Non-Verbal De-escalation Techniques
• Disengagement Techniques (Wrist Grabs, Body Grabs, Hair/Clothing Grabs + Strangulation, Avoiding Punches and Kicks)
• Role + Responsibilities of Head Person, 3 C's, presenting + securing head.

Instruction and practice of: -
Friendly come along (including non-Contact, stage one, two + figure of four)
Team approaches.

Upper arm wrap to supine hold (ready to decent to the floor)

Day 3

Instruction and practice of:
• Supine Descent
• Descent to floor in upper arm wrap
• Upper arm wrap to elevated rest and return.
• Trouble drills (sniper position)
• Securing legs in supine
• Elevated rest to standing.
• Seated de-escalation
• Decent to chair
• Trouble drills
• Unexpected and/or unintentional controlled decent to the floor where the aggressor dictates or initialises the downward movement (prone)

Upper rest to lower rest and return.
