1. Introduction to PAP
o What PAP is and why it’s used
o Where PAP fits in care home and community practice
2. Therapy modalities
o CPAP: mechanism, typical use, masks, pressure ranges, ramp and exhalation relief
o BiPAP/NIV: IPAP, EPAP, pressure support, backup rate, typical use cases
o APAP and other modes (AVAPS, ASV): when they appear in the community
3. Indications and contraindications
o OSA, COPD with hypercapnia, OHS, neuromuscular disease, acute hypoxemia
o Absolute and relative contraindications
4. Patient assessment and preparation
o Baseline obs, mental status, airway and secretion assessment, skin checks
o Consent, education, environment, equipment verification
5. Set-up and initiation
o Mask selection and fitting
o Starting pressures, ramp, humidification
o Early checks for leaks and synchrony
6. Monitoring and ongoing care
o Vital signs, comfort, skin checks, device data and adherence
o Documentation and follow up
7. Infection control and cleaning
o Daily and weekly routines for mask, tubing, humidifier, filters
o Drying, storage, no-sharing policy, AGP precautions
8. Troubleshooting and adherence
o Leaks, skin injury, dryness, aerophagia, noise, alarms
o Behavioural strategies and comfort features
9. Communication, risk and escalation
o Coaching patients and families
o Risk assessment, emergency responses, equipment failure plans
