Welcome to our Speaking up for Healthcare Workers Online Training Module. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of completion. The course duration is approximately 1 hour and will earn you 1 CPD point. You have 6 months from the date of purchase to finish this training.


Speaking up for Healthcare Workers

1. What is “Speaking Up”?
• Definition: raising a concern about anything that gets in the way of delivering safe, high-quality care
• Examples of issues: unsafe staffing levels, bullying, patient safety risks, poor practice, discrimination
2. The Legal and Ethical Context
• NHS Duty of Candour
• Public Interest Disclosure Act (whistleblowing protection)
• Professional codes (NMC, GMC, HCPC)
• Organisational policies
3. Barriers to Speaking Up
• Fear of retaliation or being ignored
• Lack of awareness of policies
• Hierarchical culture
• Emotional challenges and peer pressure
Interactive scenario: “You notice unsafe practice on your ward. What might stop you from raising it?”
4. How to Raise a Concern
• Steps for raising concerns: informal discussion, line manager, Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, escalation routes
• Documenting your concern
• Anonymous vs named reporting
• Using internal vs external channels
5. Role of the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian
• Who they are and what they do
• How to contact them
• What to expect after raising a concern
• Case study: positive outcome from Guardian involvement
6. Supporting a Culture of Openness
• Encouraging colleagues to speak up
• Listening and responding respectfully
• Manager’s role in creating a safe environment
• Psychological safety in teams
