Course Duration: 1 Hour
1. Foundations of ventilation
• Anatomy and physiology recap: gas exchange, oxygenation vs ventilation, work of breathing.
• Indications for ventilation and goals.
• Invasive vs non-invasive ventilation: benefits, risks, and monitoring.
• Safety culture and human factors in device use.
2) Equipment and safety checks
• Ventilator types: transport, ICU, home vent; NIV devices
• Circuits: single vs dual limb, filters, HME vs heated humidification, oxygen sources
• Interfaces: masks, nasal pillows, tracheostomy tubes
• Power, gas supplies, battery checks
• Pre-use checklist and leak test (follow local SOP)
3. Modes and settings (theory)
• Key modes: Volume control, Pressure control, Pressure support, SIMV, CPAP, BiPAP.
• Parameters: VT, RR, FiO2, PEEP/EPAP, IPAP/Pinsp, Ti, Trigger sensitivity, Rise time.
• Alarms: high pressure, low pressure, low VT/minute volume, apnea, FiO2, power/gas failure.
• Impact of changes: oxygenation vs ventilation troubleshooting decisions.
4. Assessment and monitoring
• Baseline assessment and risk stratification.
• ABCDE for ventilated patients, NEWS2 integration.
• Capnography and oximetry theory.
• Documentation standards and escalation.
5. Person-centred ventilator care
• Communication, capacity, and consent.
• Comfort, sedation awareness, delirium risks, oral care, pressure area care.
• Nutrition and hydration considerations.
• Equality, diversity, and inclusion needs.
6. Deterioration, alarms, and emergencies
• Structured response to common alarms.
• Accidental disconnection or leak.
• Blocked filter or water trap issues.
• Power or gas failure fallback plans.
• When and how to call for senior help and rapid response.
7. Governance and scope of practice
• Working within competence and local policy.
• Incident reporting and duty of candour principles.
• Record keeping, device tracking, and handover.
Learning outcomes
1. Describe invasive and non-invasive ventilation principles and goals of therapy.
2. Identify key ventilator modes and parameters and explain what each setting achieves.
3. Perform safe checks before use, during care, and on handover or transport.
4. Recognise and respond to common alarms and deterioration using an ABCDE approach.
5. Apply infection prevention, equipment decontamination, and device traceability requirements.
6. Deliver person-centred, dignified care that includes communication needs and consent.
7. Document care, escalation, and MDT communication to required standards.
8. Act within scope of competence and local policy, seeking senior support when required.
