Parkinson's Disease

• What is Parkinson’s Disease (PD)?
o Definition, basic neurology (dopamine, basal ganglia)
o Types / Parkinsonisms
o Epidemiology: how common, who is affected
• Causes & Risk Factors
o Genetic vs environmental factors
o Age, gender, comorbidities

2. Symptoms & Diagnosis
• Motor symptoms
o Tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness), postural instability, gait changes
• Non-motor symptoms
o Sleep disturbances, mood/depression/anxiety, autonomic issues (e.g. bladder, blood pressure), fatigue, pain
• Cognitive & Communication changes
o Speech, swallowing, cognitive impairment, hallucinations
• How diagnosis is made
o Clinical signs, imaging (if relevant), differential diagnosis

3. Parkinson’s Progression & Phases
• Stages of Parkinson’s Disease (early / mid / advanced / complex)
• How symptoms evolve over time
• Recognising complications (motor fluctuations, dyskinesias)

o Major PD meds, how they work, when given, side effects

2. Recognise common motor and non-motor symptoms and understand how these may affect a resident’s daily life.
3. Outline the stages of Parkinson’s progression and identify potential complications at different stages.
4. Understand the role of medication in managing Parkinson’s, including the importance of accurate timing and awareness of side effects.
5. Identify supportive interventions such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language support, and lifestyle adjustments.
6. Apply person-centred care principles when supporting residents with Parkinson’s, including respect for individual needs, preferences, and routines.
7. Communicate effectively with residents who experience speech, swallowing, or cognitive challenges.
