Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the basic anatomy and function of the spinal cord and describe how different levels of injury affect the body.
2. Recognise the key impacts of spinal cord injury in care homes, including movement, sensation, bladder and bowel function, breathing, and sexual health.
3. Identify primary complications of spinal cord injury and prevent secondary complications such as pressure ulcers, urinary tract infections, constipation, respiratory infections, and spasticity.
4. Respond appropriately to signs and triggers of Autonomic Dysreflexia, including carrying out immediate emergency actions and following escalation pathways.
5. Apply evidence-based approaches to skin care, repositioning, bladder and bowel management, and respiratory monitoring in daily practice.
6. Support residents’ wellbeing through dignity, privacy, safeguarding, and sensitive discussions about independence and sexual health.
7. Work effectively with the multidisciplinary team, recognising when to escalate to GPs, community nurses, continence teams, tissue viability services, and regional spinal centres.
8. Implement practical systems in the care home, such as SCI care summaries, AD emergency kits, refresher training, and monthly audits, to evidence Safe and Well-led care.
